Motorweb Privacy policy

MotorWeb provides services to the insurance industry in Australia which deal with your personal information.

This policy describes how we collect, store, use and disclose your information in carrying on our business.

1. Who is collecting your information?

MotorWeb Australia is a business owned ultimately by Trade Me Limited.

2. Security of your information.

MotorWeb holds and processes information at a data centre in Sydney, Australia. Our development team is based in Auckland, New Zealand, but our businesses system is entirely within Australia. Your information will only leave Australia if our team runs a report to test the system, or if our insurance clients access the information from their New Zealand based call centres.

We use industry-standard security.

3. What information is collected and stored?

If you are a customer of our insurance clients, they can use the MotorWeb service to access information about your vehicle for insurance purposes. We may receive some personal information from our insurance companies and from other third parties who supply us with information in line with their terms and conditions.

We retain the information we collect for audit and backup purposes.

4. Information on motor vehicles.

MotorWeb facilitates access to the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver License Information Service (NEVDIS), V-Facts (Vehicle Manufacture Data) and the Personal Properties Securities Register (managed by the Australian Financial Security Authority) which include the details of registered vehicles in Australia.

For example, if you seek a quote from an insurer that uses MotorWeb's service, your insurer can use the service to search, using your vehicle registration or VIN, for your vehicle's details.

The vehicle information included is: year, make, model, colour, body, engine and transmission information, registration status, stolen and written-off vehicle status, and if there is any money owing on the vehicle.

MotorWeb's service is only available to motor vehicle insurers and closely associated companies (for example, insurance brokers and claims investigation services).

5. Disclosure of your information

We will disclose your information in the course of performing the vehicle transactions described above to the parties to those transactions.

We use third party web analytics tools common across the internet (for example, we use Google Analytics). These services use cookies and local storage to track users across the web. Other than placing a cookie on your browser, we do not provide any of your information to such third party services. Otherwise, we only disclose your information when required by law.
